The Pakleni archipelago lies less than two kilometres off Hvar's southern coast, yet its eighteen islets remained largely inaccessible to casual visitors until the mid-twentieth century, when small motorboats began ferrying locals and early tourists to Vlaka and Palmižana. The name derives not from Hell — a persistent mistranslation — but from paklina, the pine resin once harvested here to caulk wooden hulls. By the 1970s, a handful of family-run operations had formalised seasonal routes, turning what was once a favour between fishermen into a timetabled service. Today, Hvar harbour hosts a rotating fleet of taxi boats, most operating under cooperative agreements that link departures to demand rather than rigid ferry schedules. Captains typically work twelve-hour shifts between April and October, the season when the Adriatic remains warm enough for swimming and the bora winds subside. The islands themselves — Sveti Klement, Marinkovac, Jerolim — are split between private estates, nature reserves, and a scattering of beach clubs that lease waterfront concessions from municipal authorities. Stipanska, the oldest inhabited settlement, retains its Renaissance chapel and a single stone dock wide enough for three boats. Mlini, on Sveti Klement's northern shore, shelters a cluster of restaurants built directly over pebble beaches, their kitchens serving grilled squid and octopus salad to day-trippers who arrive in waves between eleven and two. Palmižana, the most developed cove, was planted in the early twentieth century by an Austrian botanist who introduced eucalyptus, agave, and Mediterranean pine; his villa now operates as a boutique hotel, and the surrounding paths are lined with century-old palms that give the bay its name. The taxi boats themselves vary widely in size and finish, from spartan eight-seaters with vinyl benches to refurbished ribs with cushioned consoles and USB charging ports. Departures from Hvar harbour run continuously during daylight hours, with captains calling out destinations and waiting until at least four passengers commit before casting off. Return journeys operate on the same principle, though afternoon slots fill faster as beachgoers time their exits to coincide with the cooling of the day. The route to Stipanska takes nine minutes in calm water; Palmižana requires twelve; Mlini, depending on swell, up to fifteen. There are no printed tickets — payment is settled dockside, either in cash or via contactless terminals that most operators adopted after 2020.
